Corrections are generally the result of an error identified when reported by a reviser, a reviewer, a proofreader or the customer when checking the target language content or during the course of an internal or external check to ensure compliance with the relevant specifications or standards.

CSV

The CSV (comma-separated values) file format is a commonly used format for exchanging GUI texts. CSV also makes it possible to export terminology from Across for example. The CSV format is therefore suitable for exporting terminology data if you want to edit or process the data outside Across for example. CSV files can be opened and edited easily in Excel or using a text editor.

D

DIN EN ISO 17100

ISO 17100:2015-05 is the only globally valid quality management standard for translation service providers (service requirement). It replaced DIN EN 15038:2006 in May 2015. Its requirements are specifically tailored to translation service providers, and therefore go far above and beyond the general specifications for service providers set out in DIN EN ISO 9001. ISO 17100 supplements other relevant standards (e.g. the Machinery Directive or DIN EN 82079-1) by offering a standard framework for multilingual documentation.

Document management

Customer-specific files should not be sent by e-mail for data protection reasons. If the customer sends the file by e-mail, then delivery to the customer may also be made by e-mail. Alternatively, data can be exchanged via an FTP server or a download link. The oneword “one-Task” customer portal can also be used.

Domain

Specialist field, area of knowledge or activity with its own special cultural, social and linguistic characteristics.

DTP foreign-language typesetting

In DTP (desktop publishing), translated text is inserted directly into the layout document provided by you (manuals, books, brochures, magazines or catalogues). The foreign-language typesetting (= adaptation of the layout in the different foreign languages) follows the specific linguistic and cultural conventions and laws which also sometimes affect layout, design and graphics. Manuals, technical documentation, product and replacement part catalogues and other marketing documents are also produced to your specifications ensuring compliance with your corporate design guidelines.

DTT – Deutscher Terminologie-Tag

DTT e.V. is a forum for anyone involved in terminology and terminology work. Its objective is to help solve technical communication problems through advice and coordination and by arranging symposiums, seminars, webinars and workshops. Every two years the DTT e.V. awards the DTT sponsorship prize for outstanding achievements in the field of terminology science and terminology work.

E

Editable file formats

File formats which can be edited using translation memory systems, e.g. InDesign, FrameMaker, QuarkXPress, XML, HTML, MS Office files, etc. PDF files are merely a cross-platform format for viewing and printing. Ideally therefore, the translation will be done in the format of the original document used to create the PDF file.

Editing

Checking source or target language text for anything specified as a requirement by the client. This may include a check for style, register, collocations, spelling or readability, etc.

Expansion

Written languages have different lengths. For example, a written French text may take up to 35% more space than the same English source text. This plays a crucial role, for example in the foreign language layout.

F

File formats

File formats which can be edited using translation memory systems, e.g. InDesign, FrameMaker, QuarkXPress, XML, HTML, MS Office files, etc. PDF files are merely a cross-platform format for viewing and printing. Ideally therefore, the translation will be done in the format of the original document used to create the PDF file.

File preparation

Customers’ files are prepared for translation with translation memory systems in accordance with the project and software requirements, for example by optimising the source text segmenting and formatting. This ensures full recognition of any matches and terminology and that the check mechanisms are activated in the tools during quality control. File preparation may also include creating translation templates or typing out text from non-editable formats or graphics.

Full match

100% match text segments

Fuzzy match

Fuzzy match (99% or less).

G

Galley proofing

In galley proofing, a translated and revised or copy-edited text, which has already been laid out, is checked for quality and to ensure the layout is correct so the documents can be approved for print and publication. (also called: proof editing)

H

HMI

A HMI, or Human-Machine Interface, is a device or software that allows the user to communicate with machines or production equipment. How? By converting huge, complex volumes of data into accessible information. This gives the operator all of the tools necessary to control the production process. Within the world of industrial automation, it is clear that the more requirement-oriented and user friendly the HMI is, the more efficient and cost effective the task will be.

I

International SEO (search engine optimization) / SEO translation

Search engine optimization (SEO) refers to measures that help websites and their content appear at the top of search engine rankings. This is important because 99% of all internet users only click on hits that appear on the first page of search engine results. In international SEO, country-specific keywords specially researched for the content to be optimized are incorporated into the SEO translation so that the translation of your website also ranks highly in the search engine rankings in every foreign language and every destination country.

ISO 17100

ISO 17100:2015-05 is the only globally valid quality management standard for translation service providers (service requirement). It replaced DIN EN 15038:2006 in May 2015. Its requirements are specifically tailored to translation service providers, and therefore go far above and beyond the general specifications for service providers set out in DIN EN ISO 9001. ISO 17100 supplements other relevant standards (e.g. the Machinery Directive or DIN EN 82079-1) by offering a standard framework for multilingual documentation.

ISO 17100 certification

The successor standard to DIN EN 15038 has been in effect since 1 May 2015 as ISO 17100:2015. With it, the European standard for certifying translation service providers has taken another step towards internationalisation. ISO 17100 will make translation service providers comparable all over the world.

P

Post-editing

Reviewing and correction of machine-generated translations by a human translator (post-editor). The aim of post-editing is to obtain an error-free translation with as few changes to the machine output as possible.

Proofreading

Checking revised target language content and making corrections before printing.

Pseudo-localisation (“dummy translation”)

Simulates the translation within the CAT tool to test files for “translatability” and highlight any potential additional work or sources of errors beforehand.

R

Review

Procedure to check that the target language content is technically suitable for the agreed purpose. This check can be performed by employees in branch offices abroad or who are native speakers of the target language or by independent reviewers with the requisite specialist knowledge in the domain in question.

Revise

The reviser checks the translation against the original for any errors and other problems and to ensure that it is suitable for the intended purpose. This includes comparing the source language content with the target language content.

Revision

Bilingual comparison of target language content against source language content to check linguistic accuracy and suitability for the agreed purposes. The revision is performed by a second professional translator who did not translate the text and is a fundamental component of the translation process as defined in ISO 17100.

Sector-specific specialised translation

Sector-specific specialist vocabulary is used in the translation

Segment

CAT tools structure texts for translation into individual text units. These segments may include sentences, headings or longer text sections. Characters denoting the end of a sentence or a hard line break in the text define where a new segment begins.

Software localisation

Software localisation is more than just simply translating the text from a user interface. Localisation also takes into account the linguistic, cultural and technical requirements of the destination country and the interface itself and includes adapting the layout.

Source language

The language of the source language content

T

Target language

The language into which the source language content is to be translated. The result of the translation process is the target language content.

tekom

An international trade fair for technical communication. An industry meeting which takes place twice a year.

Terminology management

The definition, creation and maintenance of specialist and corporate vocabulary (corporate language/dictionary/terminology). Terminology can be created in a single language or in multiple languages.

The consistent use of specialist terms and product names simplifies the translation process, prevents misunderstandings and errors, improves the quality of texts and also reduces costs.

TM match / Match

When repeated text matches content from the translation memory (TM), a match occurs. Full match: where the text segments match 100%. Fuzzy match: some of the text matches (99% or less).

The more matches there are with old and new texts, the lower the costs of a translation.

Transcreation

Transcreation (translation + creation) involves a target language adaptation of a text taking into consideration purpose, style, tone and context. Its purpose is to produce the same emotions and associations as the original. Advertising can have a long-lasting impact on a company’s image. International advertising campaigns therefore need to be tailored to the target market.

Translatable file formats

All file formats that can be edited and overwritten directly (e.g. Word, Excel, InDesign, FrameMaker, XML). Proprietary, non-editable file formats such as PDF, JPG and GIF are not suitable for translation as additional costs will be incurred for file preparation.

With translatable file formats, the translation will be delivered in the same format and will contain all of the original formatting.

Translation management

The planning and optimisation of processes, resources and costs in translation projects. Improving the efficiency of translation processes across the company.

Translation memory (TM)

Customer-specific translation memory (main component of computer-aided translation) which acts as a digital memory for the translator: TM systems save all previously translated sentences (also referred to as segments) in bilingual format. Recurring content is always translated faster and more cost efficiently because the translator can use the existing translations in the TM which improves the consistency and quality of the translations. Well-known TM systems include Across, SDL Trados Studio, STAR Transit and MemoQ.

Translation service

An intangible product resulting from the interaction between a customer and a TSP (translation service provider).

Translation technology

Translation technologies include a series of tools used by human translators, revisers, reviewers and other individuals to make their task easier.

U
