Now ISO has adopted the first standard for plain language. The ISO standard creates guidelines for comprehensible texts in all areas of public administration and corporate communication. It is also the basis of a DIN standard for the German language, which is currently in progress.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"block-BANvtRTYDS\" class=\"wp-block-nectar-blocks-text nectar-blocks-text nectar-font-body\">Whether official letters, user manuals, or work instructions \u2013 texts with complex terms and long sentences are an obstacle for people with limited language and reading skills. This is not only about people with cognitive impairments or dyslexia, but also about people who speak the national language as a foreign language. Plain language helps here and ensures that texts are written so they can be understood easily, quickly, and as fully as possible.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"block-dFfW9zZ8Yk\" class=\"wp-block-nectar-blocks-text nectar-blocks-text nectar-font-body\">In a separate article, we explained what plain language is, where and in what form it can be used, and what to bear in mind. Now comes the formal framework.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-nectar-blocks-row nectar-block nectar-blocks-row nectar-blocks-row__inner nectar-blocks-row__wrapper parent-block-block-NXSQK4tofp\" id=\"block-NXSQK4tofp\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-nectar-blocks-column nectar-blocks-column nectar-block\" id=\"block-nRACYBBAS0\"><div class=\"nectar-blocks-column__inner nectar-blocks-column__content-wrap parent-block-block-nRACYBBAS0 nectar-blocks-column__wrapper\">\n<h2 id=\"block-aPaS8fNHSq\" class=\"wp-block-nectar-blocks-text nectar-blocks-text nectar-font-h3\">New: The first international standard for Plain Language<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"block-18wqYhhg98\" class=\"wp-block-nectar-blocks-text nectar-blocks-text nectar-font-body\">The International Organization for Standardization (ISO) has now published ISO 24495-1, the first standard for Plain Language and simplifying written communication. It provides a clear understanding of what Plain Language is and how to implement it. The document ISO 24495-1 includes recommendations and techniques as well as a checklist for the creation and use of comprehensible plain-language texts. The standard focuses on <strong>four essential principles<\/strong>:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-nectar-blocks-row nectar-block nectar-blocks-row nectar-blocks-row__inner nectar-blocks-row__wrapper parent-block-block-OU7ItIqCC2\" id=\"block-OU7ItIqCC2\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-nectar-blocks-column nectar-blocks-column nectar-block\" id=\"block-HVaOKpzwZL\"><div class=\"nectar-blocks-column__inner nectar-blocks-column__content-wrap parent-block-block-HVaOKpzwZL nectar-blocks-column__wrapper\">\n<ol start=\"1\" class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li style=\"font-size:18px\"><strong>Relevance<\/strong>: Readers get what they need.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li style=\"font-size:18px\"><strong>Findability<\/strong>: Readers can easily find what they need.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-nectar-blocks-column nectar-blocks-column nectar-block\" id=\"block-9VFf6QkXRw\"><div class=\"nectar-blocks-column__inner nectar-blocks-column__content-wrap parent-block-block-9VFf6QkXRw nectar-blocks-column__wrapper\">\n<ol start=\"3\" class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li style=\"font-size:18px\"><strong>Comprehensibility<\/strong>: Readers can easily understand what they find.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li style=\"font-size:18px\"><strong>Applicability<\/strong>: Readers can easily use the information.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<\/div><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div><\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"block-VnI8JyfkPE\" class=\"wp-block-nectar-blocks-text nectar-blocks-text nectar-font-body\">The standard was developed by an international working group together with experts from the German Institute for Standardisation (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.din.de\/de\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">DIN<\/a>). DIN will adopt the standard in the next few weeks as DIN ISO 24495-1 &quot;Plain language &mdash; Part 1: Principles and guidelines&quot; (ISO\/DIS 24495-1:2022) in the German body of standards. The corresponding <a href=\"https:\/\/www.doctima.de\/2022\/05\/entwurf-der-din-iso-einfache-sprache-ist-erschienen\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">draft standard has already been published<\/a> (only available in German) and can be obtained from the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.beuth.de\/de\/norm\/iso-24495-1\/370015899\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">specialist publisher Beuth<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-nectar-blocks-row nectar-block nectar-blocks-row nectar-blocks-row__inner nectar-blocks-row__wrapper parent-block-block-qisymNxGOk\" id=\"block-qisymNxGOk\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-nectar-blocks-column nectar-blocks-column nectar-block\" id=\"block-2Wt3HfBHME\"><div class=\"nectar-blocks-column__inner nectar-blocks-column__content-wrap parent-block-block-2Wt3HfBHME nectar-blocks-column__wrapper\">\n<h2 id=\"block-WySNJbM9Is\" class=\"wp-block-nectar-blocks-text nectar-blocks-text nectar-font-h3\">From recommendation to directive to international standard<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"block-jFrpPChxX6\" class=\"wp-block-nectar-blocks-text nectar-blocks-text nectar-font-body\">The project was co-initiated by the Plain Language Association International (<a href=\"https:\/\/plainlanguagenetwork.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">PLAIN<\/a>), which in turn is a member of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.iplfederation.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">International Plain Language Federation<\/a>. The organisation has been bringing together supporters and users of Plain Language from around the world for over 20 years, working to promote it in both the private and public sectors. Support has steadily increased in the process. Over the years, almost all aspects of factual communication have come into view, such as legal texts, health information, PR messages or technical editing and documentation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"block-62nYqhLNrE\" class=\"wp-block-nectar-blocks-text nectar-blocks-text nectar-font-body\">The efforts eventually also led to the establishment of a joint working group of the ISO Technical Committee (ISO\/TC 37 &quot;Language and terminology&quot;). The current result of this working group is now ISO 24495-1 &mdash; the first standard for Plain Language.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-nectar-blocks-row nectar-block nectar-blocks-row nectar-blocks-row__inner nectar-blocks-row__wrapper parent-block-block-eXOVUSeBoH\" id=\"block-eXOVUSeBoH\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-nectar-blocks-column nectar-blocks-column nectar-block\" id=\"block-VuRmepeUed\"><div class=\"nectar-blocks-column__wrapper parent-block-block-VuRmepeUed\"><div class=\"nectar-blocks-column__inner nectar-blocks-column__content-wrap parent-block-block-VuRmepeUed\">\n<h2 id=\"block-Gna2CmX8kV\" class=\"wp-block-nectar-blocks-text nectar-blocks-text nectar-font-h3\">The specific German standard for Plain Language will follow<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"block-booFCiL1NI\" class=\"wp-block-nectar-blocks-text nectar-blocks-text nectar-font-body\">Somewhat delayed from the founding of the ISO working group &quot;Plain Language&quot;, a national working group was founded at DIN in mid-2020. This is tasked with accompanying the work of the ISO working group at national level and, if necessary, developing rules and standards for plain language in German. This is because, as an international standard, ISO 24495-1 can only lay down generally applicable rules, but cannot provide language-specific recommendations and examples. In order to provide a practical standard for text production, specific standards per language are therefore needed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"block-zSvMXQRTdy\" class=\"wp-block-nectar-blocks-text nectar-blocks-text nectar-font-body\">The specific standard for the German language, which will specify the general recommendations from ISO 24495-1, is currently in the final phase before its publication. DIN 8581-1 &quot;Plain language &mdash; Usage for German, Part 1: Language-specific specifications&quot; was published as a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.din.de\/de\/mitwirken\/normenausschuesse\/nat\/entwuerfe\/wdc-beuth:din21:368118536\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">draft<\/a> in June 2023. Basically, everywhere where information has an influence on people&apos;s decisions and rights.<br>By using Plain Language, companies and organisations increase their accessibility. By conveying information in a comprehensible way,<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-nectar-blocks-column nectar-blocks-column nectar-block\" id=\"block-YcANsK53WE\"><div class=\"nectar-blocks-column__inner nectar-blocks-column__content-wrap parent-block-block-YcANsK53WE nectar-blocks-column__wrapper\">\n<p id=\"block-wkLkaU7yuD\" class=\"wp-block-nectar-blocks-text nectar-blocks-text nectar-font-body\">they achieve the desired results more quickly and save time and money.<br>With the international and the national standard, there are further advantages for companies and organisations that apply it: defined specifications and guidelines ensure basic requirements and simplify text creation. The time required should be reduced, while the quality should increase in many cases.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-nectar-blocks-row nectar-block nectar-blocks-row nectar-blocks-row__inner nectar-blocks-row__wrapper parent-block-block-m9ucfdyyh3\" id=\"block-m9ucfdyyh3\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-nectar-blocks-column nectar-blocks-column nectar-block\" id=\"block-ouLgy2ClVu\"><div class=\"nectar-blocks-column__inner nectar-blocks-column__content-wrap parent-block-block-ouLgy2ClVu nectar-blocks-column__wrapper\">\n<h2 id=\"block-6pbaef01nr\" class=\"wp-block-nectar-blocks-text nectar-blocks-text nectar-font-h3\">&#8230; also technical editing, documentation and translation<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"block-myzrbOKO2x\" class=\"wp-block-nectar-blocks-text nectar-blocks-text nectar-font-body\">The advantages mentioned are also evident in our core area. This is because, as a rule, the translation process is also more efficient for documents in Plain Language than for documents that are difficult to understand.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"block-0ZHEEdLLbn\" class=\"wp-block-nectar-blocks-text nectar-blocks-text nectar-font-body\">The new Plain Language rules also have an influence on the work of the technical editors. With DIN EN ISO 20607 and DIN EN IEC\/IEEE 82079-1, there are already well-developed standards that set standards for technical documentation. However, the two emerging standards, and especially the new DIN standard, have more of an impact on the linguistic design of documents in Plain Language. The draft already contains grammatical and stylistic rules for all linguistic levels. For example, it makes recommendations for sentence length, passive voice, subjunctive and also typographical marks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"block-RL8UKCtHIs\" class=\"wp-block-nectar-blocks-text nectar-blocks-text nectar-font-body\">However, initial practical tests already show that technical editors by no means have to rewrite their editorial guidelines if they want to produce DIN-compliant manuals. This is because the majority of the rules and recommendations correspond to the specifications that experienced practitioners know, for example, from the tekom guidelines and other industry standards.
